Ahimsa Silk

From ahimsa, non-violence. Silk that is spun from cocoons that have burst their cocoons, leaving the silk in strands, irregular, short lengths which cannot be reeled(as opposed to reeled silk which is reeled from cocoons which are thrown into boiling water to kill the chrysalis). Spun silk may not be as lustrous as reeled silk but has all the attributes of silk. Much Favoured by vegetarians and groups that believe in non-killing. Also called vegetarian or Peace Silk.

Ajrakh 

A type of Block printing, consisting of geometric/bold patterns. The term Ajrak is derived from Azrak meaning blue in Arabic, as their principal colour in printing is blue. Ajrak products are made with natural dyes.

Alah or mahavar is a red dye that is applied to the hands and feet of women

Anarkali suit

An anarkali salwar suit is a form of women's dress originating from the city of Lahore (modern day Pakistan). The anarkali suit is made up of a long, frock-style top and features a slim fitted bottom. It varies in length and embroidery such as floor-length cuts.

Anarkali suits owe their name to the fictional Anarkali, a courtesan in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar. According to the legend, she was murdered for her illicit relationship with the crown prince Salim, who later become the Emperor Jahangir.

Bichhiya

Toe ring (also known as bicchiya) is commonly worn by married Hindu women in India. The bicchiya is worn in pairs in the second toe of both feet and are usually made of silver metal. They are worn by the women as the symbol of being married and are not removed throughout the lifetime until their husband is alive.

Charakh

It is a process of applying starch with natural heat after dyeing/dry cleaning, traditionally a starch applied fabric is tied on a tambour and kept in the direct sunlight to achieve a crisp feel. Apart from just providing shine and crisp, this process also strengthens the fabric and restricts the shrink and makes it alive for a long period of time.

Chunni, Odhni or dupatta is an elongated piece of cloth to complete the dress. The churn is worn diagonally and is used to cover their heads.

Ganga- Jamuna saree 

The double-coloured Ganga-Jamuna saris are traditional Maharashtrian saris. The main characteristic of this sari is the plain weaving with solid colours on either side --- both sides of the sari can thus be worn. This sari is woven on double cloth principle with two shades of colour in the warp and weft.

”Garad '' means white - the colour of purity in Indian mythology since time immemorial. Garad sarees are made of mulberry silk where the yarns are not dyed but bear the natural white or off-white colour, thereby retaining the purity of the fabric.

It is a very famous and traditional embroidery type of Rajasthan and Gujrat. Gota is usually made of thin metal wires weaved together in gold and silver shades. Different petal shapes in Gota are called gota-patti.

Himroo

Himroo is a fabric made of silk and cotton, which is grown locally in Aurangabad. Himroo was brought to Aurangabad in the reign of Mohammad Tughlaq, when he had shifted his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, Aurangabad. The word himroo originated from the Persian word Hum-ruh which means 'similar'. Himroo is a replication of Kinkhwab, which was woven with pure golden and silver threads in former times, and was meant for the royal families.

Fabric made using an Indonesian decorative technique in which warp or weft threads, or both, are tie-dyed before weaving.

The Jama is an outer garment that was worn by Mughal royalty and was first introduced to India by the Mughals. Two of the characteristic features of a jama are that it is long sleeved and is securely tied under the armpits.

The Kasti is the thin woollen waistband worn over the Sadra, which passes thrice around the waist. It is made by weaving together 72 fine threads of lamb’s wool. In the past it was prepared by ladies from priestly families while chanting manthravani prayers. Wool is known to have the inherent property of absorbing and retaining vibrations. The word kasti means a boundary, and it reminds one to keep within the boundary of religious duty. The word Kasti comes from Avesta aiwyāonghana “that which is girded around” and Pahlavi kosht “boundary (of religious duty).” The word is also derived from Avestan word karsha “spiritual boundary which keeps evil away.

Kediyu

The kediyu is a garment worn by men in the rural coastal parts of western Gujarat, including Junagadh district. The kediyu is a long sleeved upper garment, pleated at the chest, which reaches to the waist.

Patiala salwar

A Patiala salwar (also called a pattian walee salwar) (also pronounced as shalwar in Urdu) is a type of female trousers which has its roots in Patiala City in the Northern region of Punjab state in India. The King of Patiala in earlier times wore a Patiala salwar as his royal suit. The Patiala Salwar has a close resemblance to the Pathani suit, which has loose layers similar to those of a salwar, and a long, knee-length top known as a kameez. The garment is no longer customarily worn by men, but has classically transformed itself with new cuts and styling into a women's garment.
